The Langston Hughes African American Film Festival, in cooperation with the Seattle Art Museum Community Partnership

Program presents the Seattle premiere of Annette von Wangenheim's documentary. An examination of Baker's life and performance, both as a mirror of European colonial fantasies and as a symbol of the 20^th century's Black consciousness movement.

Tuesday, January 26 at 7:30 PM at the Seattle Art Museum, downtown Seattle, 1300 First Avenue. Admission: suggested donation of $5 at the door. A panel discussion with visual and performing artists will follow the screening.

This documentary focuses on Joséphine Baker's life and work from a black perspective and presents the artist both as a mirror of European colonial fantasies and as a symbol of the worldwide black consciousness movement of the 20th century. Pioneers of black dance, such as Geoffrey Holder, Arthur Mitchell, Carmen de Lavallade, Maurice Hines and Elsa Wolliaston, recall their stage appearances and encounters with Baker; biographers and historians comment on well-known and unknown footage and photographs. Clichés that have persisted to this day are deconstructed and the underlying facts are set in a new historical context. Joséphine Baker was the first black diva who thought and acted in global dimensions. She became a star in Europe and a world-wide symbol of peace and a better understanding among nations and different cultures.

The Langston Hughes African American Film Festival (LHAAFF) is an annual event presented by the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center in central Seattle. The LHAAFF presents films from independent filmmakers from around the world. The LHAAFF features panel discussions, screenplay readings, training workshops, matinée screenings for middle and high school youth and in-depth discussions with filmmakers, industry professionals and local community leaders.

There's a force-of-nature behind the door to Room 325 at Frankford High School in Philadelphia. Her name is Wilma Stephenson and she teaches Culinary Arts. Infamously blunt, Mrs. Stephenson runs a "boot camp" at Frankford, disciplining her students into capable chefs and responsible students. Behind her tough-talking exterior is a teacher, who cares passionately about getting the best out of her students and making sure they receive the opportunities – including scholarships to top programs – that will help them escape the meager minimum-wage job opportunities of Northeast Philly.

Wilma Stephenson has taught at Frankford for 40 years, long before Culinary Arts became part of the school's curriculum. She can be cantankerous, and she knows it, but she will do anything for the students who get with the program and show true promise and the hunger to succeed. Those who fall short of her discipline will not be missed; many will drop out before the first week is over.

The documentary documents Mrs. Stephenson and those students committed enough to surrender themselves to her enlightened despotism through both semesters in Culinary Arts. By the end of the school year, 13 of her students will have made it through the gauntlet. These seniors aspire to scholarships that can enable them to escape the status quo of Northeast Philly and move on to a future of more opportunities. Mrs. Stephenson spells it out on the first day of school by telling the newcomers that 11 members of last year's class earned over $750,000 in scholarships, a staggering amount. At a school where over 40% of students don't even make it to their senior year, Ms. Stephenson's class stands in stark contrast. She offers these kids her version of the American Dream: You choose a realistic goal. You work hard. You work the system. You get out of Northeast Philly.

At the end of their school year, there is a one-day scholarship competition, where top Philadelphia chefs judge the students' skills and talent. But, in the end, the scholarships are even more dependent on the kids' capacity for sustained drive throughout their senior year. Can they endure the stressful challenges wrought by their home lives – having to hold minimum-wage jobs after school, and acting as surrogate parents to their siblings –
while still finding the motivation to wake up at 6AM to get to Mrs. Stephenson's class early enough to master their crepes and tournee potatoes…

Babylon launches its 2010 programme with a major new initiative linking filmmakers across continents

*BABYLON is now open for applications for 2010.

*BABYLON provides high-level, project-based training and mentorship for producer/writer-director teams seeking to broaden their access to the international film industry.

In a major new initiative funded by the European Union's MEDIA International and the Nigerian Film Corporation, European filmmakers will have the opportunity to work together with African colleagues on script and story development, production technique, and access to the international marketplace via BABYLON's network of industry consultants, funders, international sales agents and distributors.
The 2010 programme includes:

- a 5-day intensive development workshop for 14 selected projects (7 European, 7 African) during the International Film Festival Rotterdam (30th Jan- 4th Feb 2010); with script consultancy, one-on-one production and marketing analysis, screenings, case studies and networking forums;
- individual mentoring from Babylon experts during the script rewrite and preparation phase in February and March;

- a 5-day production lab based at the Nigerian Film Institute in Jos, (27th April- 2nd May 2010) which consolidates the script development of each project and gives filmmaking teams the opportunity to workshop scenes from their films or produce promotional short films based on their feature-film material; plus presentation of projects and their promotional material at the Zuma Film festival in Abuja (3rd-5th May 2010);

- Onward mentoring and promotion of all Babylon projects.

African Film Library Launched

M-Net launched the African Film Library in late September. The site has a feature films, shorts, and documentaries from the last 50 years and is available at http://www.africanfilmlibrary.com. It's in beta.
You can browse the site by a variety of factors or you can search by keyword. When I browsed for everything alphabetically I got 12 pages of results that could hold nine listings at a time, so I would guess something over 100 films are available here.

Click on the title and you'll get details about the film, including a synopsis, length, date it was produced, and language.

Tribeca All Access Call For Submissions

Tribeca All Access (TAA) is a year round networking and career development program of the Tribeca Film Institute (TFI) that supports the work of filmmakers from traditionally under-represented communities within the industry by providing access to industry representatives looking for new projects in development. Approximately 20 qualified directors and screenwriters will be selected to participate in one-on-one meetings with key industry players in addition to networking and learning from dedicated panels and comprehensive workshops during the Tribeca Film Festival. Program alumni receive year-round support through TAA OnTrack, which includes educational panels and workshops; TFI hosted presentation screenings; promotional support for completed films; and the use of digital filmmaking and editing equipment.

Tribeca All Access is open to both mid-career and emerging narrative and documentary filmmakers. Applicants are required to apply with a completed feature-length screenplay, documentary proposal, or documentary work-in-progress and must have at least one screenwriter or director attached who qualifies. Projects may be of any subject matter, genre, or budget range suited for independent or major studio production.

The Underground Railroad, a project of the annual Langston Hughes African American Film Festival, is a fall - through -winter film and discussion series. Using the metaphor of a series of strategically located “Safe Houses” in Seattle neighborhoods, the Underground Railroad is a series of intimate screenings designed to build community across the aisle and across neighborhoods. Each Safe House along the trail brings forth a different provocative work about African American life, leading to ‘freedom’ at the annual Langston Hughes African American Film Festival in April. Synopsis: My Father the Luo is a film about finding one’s identity. The main character is Roma Ndolo, a young woman who grew up in Germany with parents from Poland and Kenya. She had always longed to find out more about her “African side” so she travels to her late father’s homeland. While there she recognizes the parallels between her own life and that of President Barack Obama. Each of their fathers were from the Luo tribe and Obama’s half sister is Roma’s family friend. This film was shot during the Democratic Convention in Denver 2008. Not surprisingly there is also historic footage of Senator Obama’s trip to Kenya in 2006.

More than two hundred years ago, there was an influx into Uruguay of slaves from Africa whom, after being freed, continued to make up the poorest and most marginalized strata in society. Fernado Nunez, a Black man, a musician, and a maker of drums, sees himself as the heir to "Candombe", an important social and cultural legacy from his slave forefathers. The official history and culture of Uruguay, on the other hand, which has never acknowledged this contribution to the degree which it deserves, continues to marginalize expressions of Black culture. Fernando Nunez and his friends from the Barrio Sur back street quarter of Montevideo have decided to fight to keep these important cultural roots alive in the consciousness of the Uruguayan people.

The CityArtists Projects program provides funding for artists to develop and present their work. 2010 Eligible Disciplines include Literary (except play scripts), Media Arts and Visual Arts. Traditional/Ethnic and Multi-disciplinary projects are always welcome, so long as a primary art form is one of the eligible disciplines listed.

Awards ranging up to $10,000 support new works, works-in-progress or finished works, and all projects include a public presentation. We encourage a broad range of artistic and cultural expression that reflects Seattle's diversity.

In the last round of funding, CityArtists awarded $225,000 to 39 artists. Thirty of the 39 artist projects funded are first-time recipients, representing 77 percent of the awards. The awards range from $1,500 to $10,000, with an average award of $5,769.

Seattle's Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs will distribute to eligible Seattle arts organizations $250,000 in one-time federal funding to preserve jobs in the nonprofit arts sector threatened by declines in philanthropic and other support during the current economic downturn.

Eligibility
Seattle-based nonprofit arts and cultural organizations that are current recipients of the Office's 2009-2010 Civic Partners organizational support program are eligible to apply for funds to support staff salaries or fees for contract jobs which have been reduced, eliminated or are currently threatened. 4Culture (www.4culture.org) has additional funding for King County organizations outside of Seattle.

Award amounts
Organizations with 2008 budgets less than $150,000 are eligible for $5,000. Organizations with 2008 budgets greater than $150,000 are eligible for $15,000.

Timeline:
A review panel will meet in mid-August, and applicants will be informed of the funding decisions by the end of August. Funding will support salary or contract expenses incurred between Oct. 1, 2009 and Aug. 31. 2010.

New annual award celebrates innovative artists with a connection to Pioneer Square neighborhood and community

(King County, WA) – The Estate of Su Job, 4Culture and Artist Trust are delighted to announce a Call for Applications for the 2009 Conductive Garboil grant. This new annual, non-restricted award of $3,000 is open to Seattle artists who have a connection to the Pioneer Square neighborhood. The grant acknowledges artists who have "Demonstrated a profound ability to challenge the limits of conductive creative discourse and its effects on our society, pushing the creative act beyond the accepted limits, definitions, or purposes of art while engaging audiences outside the aesthetic industrial complex."

2010 OAH ERIK BARNOUW AWARD (December 1, 2009 – Canada, United States)

The Erik Barnouw Award, first given in 1983, honors the late Erik Barnouw, Columbia University, a historian of the mass media. One or two awards are given annually in recognition of outstanding programming on network or cable television, or in documentary film, concerned with American history, the study of American history, and/or the promotion of history.

The winning film or video program will be screened and the award will be presented at the 2010 annual meeting of the OAH in Washington, DC, April 7-10. Only films and video programs released January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009 are eligible for entry. Films and videos selected as "honorable mention" will be shown at the annual meeting, along with the Barnouw winner, as part of the OAH Screening History film series.

Update's mission is to expand the scope of contemporary artistic creations and traditional media with works dedicated to employing contemporary and new technologies in an original and intelligent way: treatment of sounds and light, use of new media, application of innovative evolutions in communications, telecommunications and broadcasting, centred on the world of information, communication, and computers and interaction.
These descriptions are in no way restrictive and should be interpreted in a broader meaning

General guidelines for entry in the competition
The aim of the competition is to present works in accordance with Update's objectives. The submitted work can have been previously exhibited, but the jury reserves the right to choose creations that are proven to be practically realisable within the possibilities of the Liedts-Meesen Foundation, keeping in mind that the works will be displayed during the exhibition.

Calendar and conditions of the competition
The choice of the 10 projects selected by the jury will be rendered public at the occasion of the Lineart Art Salon (Ghent) from the 4th to the 8th December, 2009.
Those projects that have been retained will then be installed in order to be exhibited alongside of the Update III exhibition from March to June 2010 and published in the exhibition catalog. The basic equipment is available to be used by the selected artists; specific and special equipment must be provided for, and lent by the artists for the duration of the exhibition.
During the Update exhibition, one of the nominees will be chosen for the prize award given by the Liedts-Meesen Foundation. A people's choice award is also foreseen.

Eligibility and submission details
This international competition is open to all age groups and to all nationalities. English is the working language. Deliverables: A general portfolio of the artist including a CV and a detailed description of the work submitted, accompanied by visual material is demanded. The material must be provided either in an uploadable format or must be easy to reproduce as the jury's decision will be primarily based on the visual documentation. Submissions are to be sent to Foundation Liedts-Meesen, Concours Nouveaux Médias, Zebrastraat 32/001, 9000 Gent, Belgium.

For 2010, a 5000 euro cash award is foreseen by the Liedts-Meesen Foundation. This indivisible cash award will be allocated to a work and to its creator.
Moreover, the jury reserves the right to award an honourable mention to an artist.
The Liedts-Meesen Foundation and the jury reserve the right to not award a prize and to transfer it to the next exhibition.

Partnership-in-Scholarship Grants launched to support collaborative projects between African American Historic Places and college/university scholars (September 30, 2009 – United States)

Thanks to funding from the Ford Foundation, the National Trust for Historic Preservation will be launching Partnership-in-Scholarship Grants to support collaborative projects between African American Historic Places and college/university scholars.

This year, four grants of $15,000 each (no match required) will be awarded in fall 2009 to projects that help sustain current or attract new audiences at historic sites or enhance the interpretation of challenging topics at historic sites. Eligible projects include:

* improving public access to African American historical and cultural resources at historic places,
* strengthening teaching and education at colleges and universities through historic places,
* promoting research and original scholarship of a significant theme related to African American history and culture to support joint public programs,
* providing opportunities for lifelong learning through a collaborative program,
* strengthening each institution's humanities programming in order to preserve, enhance, or enjoy significant African American historic places.

Guidelines for the Partnership-in-Scholarship Grants are available online or through the NTHP Regional Office near you. National Trust Historic Sites and elementary and secondary schools are not eligible to apply. Deadlines for applications is September 30, 2009; applications will be available in July.

The Florida Conference of Historian Special Interest Section on Media Arts and Culture wishes to encourage scholarship aimed at African-American experience in the United States. The FCH-Media Arts and Culture SIS wishes to encourage scholars examining African-American agency and autonomy since Reconstruction in the South. Key to our concerns are scholars investigating community, family, and organizations that sought to further African-American inclusion in U.S. society. Call for papers: Issues in Critical Investigation (deadline June 30)

Issues in Critical Investigation: The African Diaspora (ICI), a new initiative devoted to critical thinking and writing about the African Diaspora and the pursuit of a cross-generational dialogue on issues related to it -- http://www.vanderbilt.edu/ICI/ -- is pleased to announce our inaugural 2009 competition for the two best unpublished, single-authored manuscripts or manuscripts of linked essays. The winners of the two prizes—the Anna Julia Cooper Prize in the Humanities and the Ida B. Wells Prize in the Social Sciences—will each receive $3,000 and the option for a book contract with Vanderbilt University Press. Each manuscript must be written by an untenured professor on the general topic of the global African Diaspora and produced in any field of the Humanities and the Social Sciences.

Manuscripts will be read and closely evaluated by senior professors in the relevant fields, and the winners announced each spring. In the fall, an annual symposium will be convened at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. during which winners and finalists will present seminars on their topics.

The James & Janie Washington Foundation is happy to have two new Artists in Residence. Esther Ervin and Romson Bustillo are starting their residencies at the same time.

Esther Ervin is a dedicated working artist who

currently uses the gourd as her primary sculptural

medium. She has recently finished an Artist in Residency and the Pathways Scholarship at Pratt Fine Arts Center, where she has learned to work with metals. Her aesthetic is grounded in the use of multiple media.

Ms. Ervin has a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from

California State University at Long Beach and a

Bachelors Degree (BS) in Biology from the University of

California at Irvine.

Her work in the local arts community includes

being curator at Festival Sundiata Art Exhibits and serving as an On Site Evaluator for 4Culture. She was the curator for the Art Gallery at South Seattle Community College for four years.

Romson Bustillo returns to the foundation after nearly a year of travel in Central American and Spain. He will be working with the Foundation staff to develop a Youth Workshop in printmaking and Social Awareness.

Romson Regarde Bustillo was born on the island of Mindanao in Cagayan de Oro City, the Philippines. He moved to the US when he was a young boy. He grew up in Columbia City in the south part of Seattle.

His work is represented in private and public collections nationally and internationally, including ArtCol Trust, the Washington State Art Commission, and the Wing Luke Asian Museum. He has been an artist in residence and instructor for Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle, the Seattle Art Museum, and an NEA supported Artist in Residence for the Tacoma Art Museum.

The Langston Hughes African American Film Festival (LHAAFF), an annual presentation of the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center in Seattle, Washington gives Northwest audiences a chance to view a diverse array of irreverent, poignant, provocative documentary and narrative films on topics such as youth, politics, history, social justice and relationships.

Films in the Langston Hughes African American Film Festival (LHAAFF) combine both call-for-work entries and curated films selected by the curator and committee. Awards are given to

call-for-work entries in three categories; Audience Award, Jury Award and Local Filmmaker Award. In 2009 the festival gave an additional nod to Short films as a separate category.

In 2006, Carmen L. Scott was beginning her first season as a writer's assistant at "Law & Order: Criminal Intent". When a rough draft of a script for a hip-hop themed episode of the show crossed her desk in December of 2006, one month after the Sean Bell shooting, she began blogging about the 16 days it took to shoot the episode and the uneasiness she felt helping the stereotype-laden script get filmed. Ultimately she would turn the blog into a screenplay, and with the help of husband and partner, Lenny Payan, into a short film.

This haunting film explores impact and consequences of a union consecrated in blood. One couple's love story is a metaphor for the history of White/Black race relations in the USA. Filmmaker Alrick Brown continues to reveal himself as a "filmmaker to watch" winning two of the festival's most prestigious awards. Previous films by Brown include "Death of Two Sons", based on the lives of Amadou Diallo and Jesse Thyne, "Familiar Fruit" a modern day Greek tragedy that leaves the audience holding the torch, and "The Adventures of SuperN----", an allegory about the shooting death of Amadou Diallo.
All of these films have screened at the LHAAFF.

JURY AWARD - BEST SHORT FILM

5 Days in July revisits the 1967 Newark Riots, an important cataclysmic moment in American history. This civil disturbance began when African American cab driver and musician John W. Smith was arrested, beaten and dragged into Fourth Precinct for a minor traffic infraction. This action triggered rebellion among the African American community that spread throughout Newark. To quell the unrest, government officials mobilized the New Jersey State Police and National Guard.

Local filmmaker Georgio Brown takes a detour from 18 years of producing Coolout TV to create an intimate look at hip hop and social justice collective, the 206 Zulu Nation. The 206 Zulus are multicultural family of artists who form the Seattle chapter of the larger 206 Zulu Nation, and international social justice hip hop movement founded by Afrika Baambata. Candid discussion, performance and interviews with members of the collective.

ABOUT THE FILM

Organization of American Historians Erik Barnouw Award Honorable Mention Recipient

In one remarkable day, four college freshmen changed the course of American history. February One tells the inspiring story surrounding the 1960 Greensboro lunch counter sit-ins that revitalized the Civil Rights Movement and set an example of student militancy for the coming decade. This moving film shows how a small group of determined individuals can galvanize a mass movement and focus a nation’s attention on injustice.

The Greensboro Four, Ezell Blair, Jr. (now Jibreel Khazan), David Richmond, Franklin McCain and Joseph McNeil, were close friends at North Carolina A&T University before they became political activists. Two of the four had grown up where segregation was not legal, while another’s father was active in the NAACP. They recount how the idea for the sit-in grew out of those late night “bull sessions” that make college years so rich. Prof. William Chafe helps set the historical context the four young men confronted: the Civil Rights Movement had stalled since the Brown decision and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. On the night of January 31, 1960 the four dared each other to do something that would change the South and their own lives forever. They decided to sit-in at the whites-only lunch counter at Woolworth’s in downtown Greensboro the next day.

On February 1st, dressed in their Sunday best, the four men sat down at the lunch counter. Frank McCain remembers that he knew then this would be the high point of his life, “I felt clean...I had gained my manhood by that simple act.” The four were refused service; when they did not leave the store the manager closed the lunch counter. In the days that followed they were joined by more students from local Black colleges and a few white students who also sat-in at other lunch counters in Greensboro. Prof. Vincent Harding reminds us that the Civil Rights Movement was the first major social movement to be covered by television news so word of the events in Greensboro spread across the nation like a prairie fire. Within just a few days students were sitting in at lunch counters in fifty-four cities around the South.

Greensboro’s civic leadership pressured the President of North Carolina A&T to halt the protests but he counseled the students to follow their own consciences. Finally after months of protests the Woolworth management quietly integrated its lunch counter. The wave of direct action started by the Greensboro Four coalesced in the formation of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the vanguard of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. February One not only fills in one of the most important chapters in the Civil Rights Movement, it reminds us that this was a movement of ordinary people motivated to extraordinary deeds by the need to assert their basic human dignity. It provides an eloquent argument to today’s generation of students that involvement in the politics of our own time is a vital part of any college education.

In honor of Black History Month, the Langston Hughes African American Film Festival and the Seattle Art Museum are partners in presenting a special free screening of the film Rebirth of a Nation by Paul Miller (aka DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid).

The film is a 'remix' of D.W. Griffith's 1915 "Birth of a Nation" that was highly controversial due to its graphic portrayal of racism in the post-Civil War south. Miller's remix deconstructs one of the most influential and inflammatory movies ever made, while drawing striking parallels to present socio-political conflicts in America. The film includes Paul's original score, performed by Kronos Quartet.

Mixing the traditional and the contemporary, from cajón to Jazz, Chocolate composed and played many music styles, taught all over the world and contributed to the creative development of numerous artists including the dance group Peru Negro.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, Trouble the Water is directed and produced by Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine producers Tia Lessin and Carl Deal. The film tells the story of an aspiring rap artist and her streetwise husband, trapped in New Orleans by deadly floodwaters, who survive the storm and then seize a chance for a new beginning. It’s a redemptive tale of self-described street hustlers who become heroes that takes you inside Hurricane Katrina in a way never before seen on screen.

Trouble the Water opens the day before Katrina makes landfall, just blocks away from the French Quarter but far from the New Orleans that tourists know. Kimberly Rivers Roberts is turning her video camera on herself and her 9th Ward neighbors trapped in the city. “It’s going to be a day to remember,” Kim says excitedly into her new camera as the storm is brewing. It’s her first time shooting video and it’s rough, jumpy but dense with reality. Kim’s playful home-grown newscast tone grinds against the audience’s knowledge that hell is just hours away. There is no way for the audience to warn her. And for New Orleans’ poor, there is nowhere to run.

As the hurricane begins to rage and the floodwaters fill their world and the screen, Kim and her husband Scott continue to film, documenting their harrowing voyage to higher ground and dramatic rescues of friends and neighbors.

Intertwining Kim and Scott’s insider’s view of Katrina and powerful video with a mix of verite and in-your-face filmmaking, Deal and Lessin follow their story through the storm and its aftermath, and into a new life. Along the way, they discover Kim’s musical talent as rap artist Black Kold Madina when she finds the only existing copy of her recorded music survived the storm with a relative in Memphis. Kim’s performance in that moment reveals not only devastating skills as a musician, but compacts her life story into explosive poetry that paints a devastating picture of poverty.

The MIT Visual Arts Program (VAP) seeks committed, curious and creative students for the 2009-2010 academic year. This selective two-year program grants successful participants a Master of Science in Visual Studies (SMVisS) degree. Positioned within the MIT School of Architecture and Planning, the VAP offers a wealth of exploration and research opportunities in transdisciplinary relationships with programs and labs in the MIT community.

The Program

The MIT Visual Arts Program operates as a critical production- and education-based laboratory within the context of an advanced technological community. The program explores the role of art in society and considers artistic practice as knowledge production, thus promoting an approach that challenges traditional genres and the limits of the gallery/museum context. Studio investigations and artistic research are realized through performance, sound and video, photography, interrogative design, as well as through experimental media and new genres. The program also emphasizes art that engages public spheres, the production of space, networked cultures, and questions relating to the environment, gender, and social stratification. Students are encouraged to work individually or collectively to develop their own vision of artistic practice. Extra-curricular activities include a cross-disciplinary lecture series, field trips, workshops, studio visits, and public presentations.

VAP Faculty

Instructors are world-renowned, with active, international careers and a strong interest in cross-disciplinary debate, research, and modes of production. VAP Director and Associate Professor Ute Meta Bauer directed SITAC VI 2008 in Mexico City, co-curated Documenta11 and was Artistic Director of the 3rd Berlin Biennial. Professor Joan Jonas participated in this year's Biennales in Sidney and Sao Paulo, and the Yokohama Triennale. VAP Professor Krzysztof Wodiczko is the Director of MIT's Center for Advanced Visual Studies. In 2008 he completed a major public projection for the city of Warsaw to commemorate the 1968 student uprising, and the War Veteran Projection Vehicle for the city of Denver, during the Democratic National Convention. Newly appointed Associate Professor Gediminas Urbonas and his partner Nomeda Urbonas were awarded Honorable Mention for the Lithuanian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2007. Visiting Professor Antoni Muntadas represented Spain at the Venice Biennale 2005. Lecturers Andrea Frank (Photography), Amber Frid-Jimenez (Participatory Media), Joe Gibbons (Video), Wendy Jacob (Autism Studio), Jae Rhim Lee (Environmental Studies), and Joe Zane (Mixed Media) are prominent practitioners in their fields.

Joseph Doughrity (”Joe D.”) is a writer, producer, and director. The son of an educator, Joe grew up an avid reader and developed hobbies ranging from sports to comics, videogames, and a fascination with Japanese culture. His first job in Hollywood was as a Production Assistant on John Singleton’s debut film “Boyz N the Hood”. This was the start of a five-year collaboration with the Oscar nominated director including serving as his personal assistant on the films “Poetic Justice” and “Higher Learning”.

Joe recognized the significance of the Internet early and worked in the dotcom industry beginning in 1999 as a Content Provider for new media startup Psylum, Incorporated. When Psylum was purchased by USA Networks’ Sci-fi Channel, Joe was chosen to re-launch the Psycomic website and recruited iconic filmmaker Kevin Smith (”Clerks”) to write a weekly column that became the basis of his book Kevin Smith Speaks. Psycomic became a leading destination on the Internet for fans of comic books and graphic novels. He continues to work on the web serving as the Video Editor for PopCultureShock.com, a leading news, review, and interview site focusing on comics, movies and videogames.

Joe has written and edited for comic books (for Caliber Press, publishers of The Crow and U.N. Force), magazines (The Source, Rappages, Straight From the Lip), and motion pictures (see partial credits below). As a documentarian, he created electronic press kits for the urban romance “Jason’s Lyric” and Tony Bill’s “A Home of our Own”. Joe’s “Seven Days in Japan”, a documentary he wrote, produced and directed, won Best Documentary at the 2005 San Diego Comic-con Film Festival beating out films which cost ten times its modest budget. “Seven Days in Japan” went on to screen at the Pacific Media Expo and premiered on cable’s BET-Jazz channel in February of 2007.

As a screenwriter, Joe has written for studios and production companies such as HBO (”Wheels of Steel: The KRS One/Scott La Rock Story”), Mandalay Films (”Grandmaster Flash”) and New Line Cinema. Ashkenaz is a fascinating study of Ashkenazi culture and people.

What happened to the Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe when they came to settle in the Middle East and what happened to Middle Eastern and North African Jews as a result of the encounter? How did the 'others' of Europe become the Europe of 'the others'? And how are the Palestinians related to all this?

Filmmaker Rachel Leah Jones sets out to reveal the bubbling layers of the Israeli 'melting pot' and there is hardly a stone she leaves unturned: Pale skinned and dark skinned; young and old; Holocaust survivors and Holocaust experts; Moroccan poets pondering their Arab-Jewish identity and Yiddish lovers lamenting the loss of their mama loshen (mother tongue); native dwellers whose existence has been threatened by the new
European comers and intellectual youngsters composing the manifesto of a new movement for the protection of Ashkenazi culture. This cacophony is weaved together with the subversive lyrics of one of Israel's most intriguing Rock ensembles 'HaBiluim' creating a cutting edge investigation that goes under and beyond Israel's 'black and white' politics.

SPIRITS IN STONE traces the 1,000 year old culture of stone carving in Africa through the work of the legendary Shona stone carvers whose homeland is Zimbabwe and southeastern Africa. Through these artists, the spirit of the stone is revealed to the artist and expressed through its carving.

Seattle WA, -- Much like stonecarvers themselves, Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center Artistic Director Jacqueline Moscou and local playwright Daniel W. Owens have been perfecting, sculpting, and shaping the play Bobbie and Jerome for over four years. They met in 1992 and planned for years to work together. In 2004 Owens asked Moscou to set up an early reading and work through some rewrites. Immediately Moscou said yes, and together they readied Bobbie and Jerome for the LHPAC stage.

Connecting with the Stonemason's Union and a seasoned stone carving professional to consult was crucial to the play's development and success. West Seattle stone carver Sabah Al-Dhaher joined the creative team and was tasked with leading a special intensive "Stonecarving Boot Camp" for the playwright, director, and actors. "I will never look at a rock the same way again! My hands are still recovering," says local actor G. To'mas Jones. who plays the role of Bobbie.

Bobbie and Jerome is the captivating story of two cousins fighting their addictions, their joined past, and each other. The complex art of stone carving is at the play's core and an authentic depiction of the craft is crucial to the play's success. Errol is the "Stone Yard's" master mason who admires both Bobbie and Jerome for their talent as stone carvers, but also fears for their futures. Set in the stone yard of a gothic Harlem cathedral in 1998, this world premiere drama opens a lens into the lives of two men struggling to save the Stone Yard and settle a past score.

"Bobbie and Jerome embodies everything LHPAC is about. We create a home for African American arts and its artists, and are dedicated to the development of new works," says Jacque Moscou. Throughout Bobbie and Jerome's development process LHPAC has pooled creative resources and connected with many different corners of the artistic community. Moscou continues, "Art transforms people's lives. This play drives that message home. Personally, connecting with art through stonecarving has been a blast!"

On October 13 the general public is invited to get a taste of "Stonecarving Boot Camp" and chat with the actors, director, playwright, and local stone carver Sabah Al-dhaher at his open studio tour. This free event will be held from 6-8 pm at 3838

LHPAC always encourages new audiences to experience the thrill of Live Theatre. October 7 is a "Pay-What-You-Can-Preview" performance and LHPAC will participate in Live Theatre Week's FREE Night of theatre on October 16th.

play Mutambi and Lindstrom was read in 2006 at the McCarter Theater in Princeton, New Jersey. Stage/screen and television actor John Amos read the role of Mutambi. Owens' The Measuring Stick [aka The Chisler] was staged in 2003 as part of the 2nd Annual Seattle FringeACT Festival of New Original Works. He wrote the book for the musical Little Ham which received "rave" reviews in the New York Times and The New Yorker in December 2001. Little Ham was also produced Off-Broadway in the Fall of 2002. He also wrote the book for The MoreYou Get - The More You Want, which was produced Off-Broadway by the FDCAC. In 2002 his play Forever My Darlin' had an extended run at Chicago's ETA Theater. And in the summer of 1999 Mutambi and Lindstrom was produced at the 15th Annual National Black Theater Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

In 1997, Owenswas commissioned by Seattle's ACT Theatre, as part of their "FirstACT" play development project, to write Aunt Lou and Miss Sara. His 1992 play, The Gang on the Roofd his work produced by: The New Federal Theater, The Frederick Douglass Creative Arts Center (FDCAC), The Negro Ensemble, The George Street Playhouse (New Brunswick, New Jersey), and The Westport Summer Playhouse (Westport, Conn.). He was twice a participant in the Eugene O'Neill National Playwrights Conference (Waterford, Conn.) and was the recipient of a Rockefeller Grant for Playwriting. Mr. Owens graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Boston with a B.A. in English, attended Yale School of Drama, and receivedhis M.Ed. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is a native of Malden, Massachusetts and currently lives in Seattle with his daughter Gabriela. was one of six grant recipients from the Fund for new American Plays - Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Sabah Al-Dhaher was born in Nasriyah, Iraq. At the age of fifteen he was accepted to the Institute of Fine Arts in

Basra, Iraq, where he lived and received his training in classical art, graduating

first in his class in 1989. Al-Dhaher fled Iraq in 1991 due to his involvement in a failed uprising against the regime of Saddam Hussein at the end of the first Gulf war. After spending 2 ? years in a refugee camp in the desert of Saudi Arabia, he came to the U.S. as a political refugee in 1993. Ebony Johnson, a Nanaimo native has combined her award-winning talent - and personal tragedies - to communicate, with a passion for her African roots, and to produce the second annual Vancouver Pan-African Film and Arts Festival to be held October 24 to 26 in Vancouver. With cutting-edge films, a moving concert of African music, panel discussions, workshops and dance, Ms. Johnson plans to make this year's Festival the best yet. Actor and filmmaker Danny Glover will make a guest appearance.

"With the Province of British Columbia and both the cities of Vancouver and Burnaby declaring October 24 to 26 as "Kinship Day" and the generous support of our sponsors, my goal of breaking down barriers between cultures is closer than ever" said Ms. Johnson, who also speaks French and Japanese and hosts her own world beat music show on-line Afrobeat. "The purpose of the VPAFF is to promote Canada's cultural diversity and to build community through the arts".

Last year's inaugural VPAFF (held October 26 & 27) was a great success - and an historic event. The Fall 2008 Underground Railroad series begins Sept. 24!

The Underground Railroad Film Series is the neighborhood participation component of the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center’s African American Film Festival. The URFS uses the metaphor of the Underground Railroad to illuminate that community can exist over many miles and many backgrounds with one common cause. Each month from September through February, at various ‘safe houses’ in greater King County, the Underground Railroad Film Series partners with community groups, organizations and traditionally marginalized populations to host a screening of films by or about Black people that intersect across cultures, providing opportunities for community engagement and self-reflection. This moveable feast of provocative films is deepened with post-screening panels that provide context, stimulate thoughtful discussions that wind back to the Underground Railroad: Community can exist over many miles and many backgrounds with one common cause: Human integrity for all.
